Jo Drew,Movement Therapist

I believe in the power of movement and connection for healing and growth. I aim to apply innovative approaches that integrate Movement Psychotherapy, Authentic Movement, Sacred Dance and Somatic Shamanism.

I am a trauma informed therapist;currently working at a charity with children and young people who have sexual trauma. I am a creative therapist; I use movement, art, sand tray, drama, writing and music to enable expression of difficult feelings. My core training is as a movement Psychotherapist; working with the body to explore trauma and the difficulties that life can present us with. I have a background in Jungian psychology, and this informs my practice- the symbolic world, archetypes, dreams, fairy tales and myth. I have been a practicing therapist for 25 years.
I am a Reiki and mindfulness practitioner and have worked with adults with anxiety and depression using mindful practice over a number of years.
I am a Astroshamanic practitioner using the seasons of earth and sky to facilitate workshops. I trained in Shamanism over 30 years ago and over the years have developed a somatic approach.
Body awareness and movement informs all of my work and I believe we are always dancing!!

My calling is to work with people to discover their authentic selves and in addition to my day job, I run community workshops and a small private practice. I look forward to meeting you!!

Movement Psychotherapy

Movement psychotherapy, also known as dance/movement therapy, is a therapeutic approach that uses expressive movement to support emotional, cognitive, physical, and social integration. Rooted in the understanding that the body and mind are deeply interconnected, movement psychotherapy allows individuals to explore and express feelings, sensations, and memories that may be difficult to access through words alone. Through guided movement, clients engage in a creative and nonverbal process that can help uncover insights, release tension, and foster a greater sense of self-awareness. By observing and participating in these embodied experiences, movement therapists support clients in developing a deeper understanding of their inner world, which can lead to healing, growth, and a renewed connection to themselves and others. Movement psychotherapy is often used in settings ranging from mental health clinics to wellness centers and is beneficial for individuals seeking to heal from trauma, improve self-esteem, and develop coping strategies for life’s challenges.

Authentic Movement

Authentic Movement; eyes closed. Movement expression arising from the depths of self, no music. Held in circle by a compassionate witness. Learning the language of the body, a soul language. Connecting to the felt sense.
Authentic movement is influenced by Jung’s concept of the active imagination. It is a depth practice and rich and fulfilling for those committed to self development and soul work. I have been facilitating Authentic Movement groups for nearly 20 years.

Somatic Shamanism

Somatic or embodied shamanism is a healing practice that combines body-centered, or somatic, awareness with shamanic techniques to cultivate deeper connection with oneself and the natural world. In this approach, the body is seen as a vessel of wisdom, holding emotions, memories, and energy that, when accessed consciously, can reveal insights and pathways for healing. Somatic shamanism invites practitioners to engage in practices like movement, breathwork, and visualization to access altered states of awareness, allowing them to release stored tension, process emotions, and reconnect with a sense of inner balance and vitality. Through this integration of body-focused practices and shamanic wisdom, individuals can transform physical and emotional blockages, gain clarity, and reconnect with their innate capacity for healing and wholeness.
